FAQ’s
Who should get an OT driving assessment?
There are various situations where an occupational therapy (OT) driving assessment may become necessary. These assessments are often needed after a change in cognitive and physcial capacity.
- Individuals with physical, cognitive, or other impairments that could affect their driving capabilities.
- Individuals with disabilities who wish to learn to drive but may have concerns about road safety or their capacity to drive.
- Individuals recovering from injuries or trauma resulting from road accidents, potentially dealing with anxiety as a consequence.
- Elderly drivers who have been recommended by their local GP to undergo an OT driving assessment.
- Anyone who has doubts about their ability to continue driving safely.
What does an OT driving assessment consist of?
An OT driving assessment comprises two components. The first, an off-road evaluation, involves an assessment and interview conducted by the therapist to gauge the individual’s physical and cognitive capacities. Vision screening is also conducted during this phase. The second component takes place on the road, involving an assessment conducted in a vehicle alongside the therapist and a qualified driving instructor. This on-road assessment aims to identify any medical or physical conditions that might hinder the individual’s ability to drive safely.
Following the assessment, the assessor provides recommendations to support continued safe driving. These recommendations may include:
-
- Suggesting potential vehicle modifications to enhance driver performance and confidence.
- Offering strategies that can improve safe driving practices, such as limiting driving to daytime hours or short distances from home.
- Providing guidance on the management and ongoing monitoring of the individual’s driving abilities.
- Arranging for additional driving lessons to enhance the individual’s learning and safety on the road.
What does an occupational therapy driver assessment cost?
The cost of an assessment can vary depending on the complexity of the client’s needs. The costs of the driving instructor are included. Please contact us for more information.
What can I expect from an OT driving assessment?
After completing an occupational therapy (OT) driving assessment, your referring GP or specialist will receive a report detailing the assessment’s results. This report plays a crucial role in determining whether you can continue driving. In some cases, the assessment outcome may lead to the decision that the client is not fit to drive.
